Activities & Accomplishments:

Founder's Day Luncheon and New Member Induction.

On September 24, 2006, nineteen general members and two associate members were installed in The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc. Bergen/Passaic Chapter (Coalition). The installation ceremony was combined with the 20th Anniversary Founder's Day Luncheon where the Coalition celebrated past and present members and embraced the future by welcoming new members.

The women were chosen for their leadership qualities, outstanding character and dedication to community service. These qualities are fundamental because they embody the purpose and success of the Coalition. The prospective members called themselves "The Triumphant Group".

A requirement for all prospective members is to identify an advocacy issue in our community and develop and complete a project on that issue. Throughout the summer months, the Triumphant Group met on a regular basis to plan a women's empowerment program for Shelter our Sisters, a local domestic violence shelter. These ladies utilized their personal resources and contacts to ensure that the event covered topics that would be useful to the women in the shelter.

On Sunday, August 27th the Triumphant Group launched their project at Englewood Hospital. The project was entitled "Women Empowering Women" and focused on the importance of developing one's mind, body and soul to help achieve optimal health and well-being. The program focused on 3 main tenets; personal growth and development, health and well-being, and professional development.

The one-day program was attended by over 60 women and children. The day was divided into two components, the morning session focused on health and health issues, and the afternoon focused on self-image and self-care. Interactive workshops for the parents included such topics as HIV and STD awareness, mental health screenings, blood pressure and cholesterol screenings; resume writing and job interviewing tips, advocacy and exploring business opportunities. While the parents participated in workshops, the children were entertained and kept active in a well organized children's academy that featured such activities as developing posters about why they were special, making picture frames, and other child-friendly crafts and activities. Babies R Us generously provided state of the art equipment, supplies and volunteers for the infant and toddlers room.

The women were invited to shop at the end of the program and select business suits and shoes for interviewing purposes that were collected by the group members. The participants received massages during lunch by students from the Academy of Massage Therapy in Hackensack. All of the participants remarked that the day was well organized and that they gained so much information and valuable resources, and that they were extremely glad that they attended. The program was a huge success, and many of the participants requested that the event be repeated annually.

The Coalition is proud to have these "triumphant" women join our sisterhood. The newly installed members included: Dr. Afriye Amerson, Karen Beckford-Bennett, Lisa Bennett, Luay Broadnax, Elizabeth Carter, Cynthia Hill, Lorna Hines-Cunningham, Councilwoman Monica Honis, Andrea Iton, Michelle James, Audra Michelle Jackson, Maureen Joseph, Paula Madison-Jenkins, Carla Murray, Khuraira Musa, Gwenette Reese, Pamela Richardson, Yvette Roland, and Heather Walker. The associate members are Elaine Meryl Brown and Dr. Astare Selassie.
