Community Forum and Luncheon
"How The 2010 Census Affects Your
Everyday Life: Voting, Education, Taxes,
Redistricting, Government Services,
Business, and Healthcare"
On Saturday, March 19th, 2011, The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc., Bergen/Passaic Chapter (NCBW 100) in partnership with the Garden State Bar Association and The United States Census hosted a free community forum and luncheon to discuss Census 2010 and Redistricting in New Jersey at the Richard Rodda Community Center in Teaneck, New Jersey.
Spearheaded by the Public Advocacy Committee, the forum, titled "How the 2010 Census affects Your Everyday Life - Voting, Education, Taxes, Redistricting, Business and Government Services" was a follow-up to an extremely informative presentation earlier this year at NCBW’s General Membership meeting. During that presentation members learned that Communities of color are nearly 40% of New Jersey's population and the redrawing of these maps must reflect fair representation in the state legislature in order to best serve the interest of our communities. The creation of more competitive districts where either Democratic or Republican candidates can win will encourage both parties to engage Hispanic and African-American communities in the political process which in turn will result in an overall increase in minority voter participation.
With an audience of over 100 attendees and invited leaders, the 60 minute panel discussion was moderated by Thom Jackson, Esq. – President of the Garden State Bar Association and included Dr Ardie Walser, President of the Teaneck Board of Education, Arnold Brown - Former Englewood Assemblyman and Historian, Donita Judge, Esq., Project Director of Redistricting and Staff Attorney for the Advancement Project, 35th District Assemblywomen Nellie Pou and Elease Evans, Whittona Burrell – United States Census Bureau and Cid d. Wilson, Sr. Research Analyst for Cabrera Capital Markets, LLC and Vice-Chair for the Bergen Community College Board of Trustees.
Although the next census will not take place for another 10 years, attendees learned that it is still not to late to express their concerns and…THE REDISTRICT PROCESS IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN ELECTION DAY!
Residents can contact the apportionment commission through its website at apportionmentcommission.com.

NCBW donates to Oasis Annual Giving Campaign
During NCBW's annual Kwanzaa program, the chapter made a $500 donation to Oasis, a Haven for Women and Children in Paterson, New Jersey. In the spirit of giving, this gift was in support of Oasis' first ever Annual Giving Campaign. The adult women's and children's educational programs at Oasis are consistently filled to capacity due to the increasing need in the community. The Bergen/Passaic chapter was pleased to partner with Oasis during these challenging times as they continue their efforts to relieve the suffering, feed the hungry, and bring peace to the neediest in the Paterson community. Jaclyn Durant (President, NCBW Bergen/Passaic Chapter) and Jane Nelson (NCBW member, Oasis Liaison) presented the donation to Oasis Board President Patricia A. McLaughlin.
Members of NCBW Bergen/Passaic Chapter continued their tradition of providing holiday gift bags to the women at Oasis. Coalition sisters personally donated a beautiful array of holiday gift bags filled to the brim with essential products every woman at Oasis needs. Holiday bags and baskets were collected containing an assortment of items such as shampoo, conditioner, soap, body wash, body lotion, toothbrushes and toothpaste, and various other personal care products. Whether the Oasis women reside in their own home, in an apartment, or in a shelter, products such as these are always appreciated by these women who have limited resources.

NCBW Bergen/Passaic Chapter and the Bergen County Chapter of the Links, Inc. sponsored the film "Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats & Rhymes" on Saturday, Nov. 3. This event, held at Teaneck High School, was part of the 2007 Teaneck International Film Festival held Nov 2 - Nov 4. It was very well attended by young adults from the local communities, including Essex county.
Following the screening, NCBW member Heather Walker moderated a panel discussion which featured Reverend Lonnie McLeod, Audra Jackson (chair, NCBW Education Committee), Rahfeal Gordon (inspirational speaker of "Hip-Hop Saved My Life", Hasan Salaam (performer), and local Bergen County students. The group in attendance enthusiastically participated in the Q&A session with the panelists.
Rahfeal Gordon, one of the young panelists, has since garnered publicity since this event. The Star Ledger newspaper did a feature article on his life story. He has written a book, was featured in a magazine article, and has conducted workshops at the high schools. There is also the possibility of a TV deal.
Following the documentary and panel discussion, NCBW and the Links hosted a pizza party, which was a huge success.

On June 19, 2007, NCBW Bergen/Passaic Chapter co-sponsored "R-E-S-P-E-C-T. When did we lose it? How do we get it back?", a symposium on how Black America is perceived and depicted. Five leading African-American women's organizations joined a civil rights group to rally a call to action for renewing respect for women by sponsoring the first of a series of symposiums at the historical Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem as a symbolic first step to evoke change through public debate. In this unique forum, for the first time, community leaders and cultural influencers challenged the collective silence about the erosion of respect for human values in America and how it impacts the perception of Black America in today's media, sports and entertainment worlds. The symposium coincided with the Schomburg's exhibit: Stereotypes vs. Humantypes, which was on display in the exhibit hall.
The Health Committee spearheaded NCBW Bergen/Passaic Chapter’s participation in the American Cancer's Society's George Washington Bridge Challenge on Sunday, June 10, 2007. This non-competitive annual event is an uplifting salute to the area's cancer survivors and their families. The NCBW Bergen/Passaic Chapter partnered with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra in their annual Community Partners Concert featuring Leslie Uggams on June 20, 2007. The Chapter sold tickets and raised funds for our Treasury. Arts and Culture hopes to continue this partnership as it is an ideal way to introduce other art forms and raise money at the same time. |
